Seraphim are six-winged creatures, one of the highest and most divine rank of angels according to the Bible. They are depicted with great frequency in Orthodox frescoes and Byzantine art, and are still quite common in Russian Orthodox iconography, though the depiction has fallen out of favor somewhat in Western Christianity.

I love this strange creature, the odd floating head in a flurry of wings. Here, the border is inspired by illuminated manuscripts, and the seraphim itself is composed of three Louisiana-native birds: the Brown Pelican, the Blue Heron, and the Egret. I imagine that, together, these three birds create a kind of divinity of the natural world, one that can hopefully watch over and protect our natural resources.
